PhD fellowship in the field of 'the dual artistry that unfolded between the Danish artists Aase Seidler Gernes (1927-2018 ) and Poul Gernes (1925-1996)'

The Graduate School at Arts, Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University, in collaboration with Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg and New Carlsberg Foundation, invites applications for a fully funded PhD fellowship in the dual artistry that unfolded between the Danish artists Aase Seidler Gernes (1927-2018) and Poul Gernes (1925-1996) provided the necessary funding is available. This PhD fellowship is available as of 1 September 2024 for a period of up to three years (5+3). The candidate who is awarded the fellowship must commence his/her PhD degree programme on 1 September 2024.

The offered PhD scholarship is supported by the New Carlsberg Foundation and is anchored at the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg in collaboration with Aarhus University.

The purpose is to contribute new perspectives on one of the central figures in Danish art history, Poul Gernes, and to embrace the collective project that constituted the joint work of Poul Gernes and the artist Aase Seidler Gernes. The research project must thus be seen as a part of rethinking the way in which Gernes's work has been viewed so far, and at the same time contribute with new approaches to the understanding of artistic creations as collective.

The research project is expected to result in an exhibition at Kunsten. In addition, a research-based publication and two seminars in Aalborg and Aarhus are planned, which connect colleagues and museums in a Nordic context. The research project is based on a close collaboration between museum and university through teaching projects and seminars.

It is expected that the future scholarship holder can read, write, and understand Danish and is also fluent in written and spoken English.
