Vision

The Art Museum of Modern Art Aalborg is a living art museum with room for contemplation, wonder and fascination. With an extensive international collection consisting of approximately 4,000 works of art from the end of the 19th century onwards, Kunsten is one of the most important museums within modern art in Denmark. In addition, the museum building is a craft in itself. The building was designed by the world-famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and built in a modernist style with unique lighting. From 2014 to 2016, Kunsten underwent a thorough restoration, and with the reopening in January 2016, the museum today stronger than ever, both as a national and an international museum.

Vision

Brave and relevant with our guests and art at the center.

Mission

+ to inspire people and give back to society in everything we do – aesthetically, creatively and formatively.

+ to offer the art museum as a dialogue-based platform – for artists and guests – which in a time of upheaval promotes aesthetic perception, creative learning, critical experience and contributes to new thinking among those who visit us.

+ to be the artistic and cultural lighthouse in North Jutland, which in partnership with Louisiana and Utzon Center increases the local anchorage and creates high national and international visibility.

+ to be the attractive co-creative workplace that ensures a good working life and attracts employees with the highest professional level or talent within their field.

+ to rethink and develop tomorrow's art museum business based on strong partnerships with a commercially based business foundation.

Purpose

The art is a state-recognized art museum with Aalborg Municipality as its main contributor. Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg is a self-governing institution that, in its work, is based on the museum law's interconnected tasks: collection, registration, preservation, research and dissemination. The museum must illuminate the history and current expression of visual art as well as its aesthetic and cognitive dimensions. Kunsten must actualize knowledge of the visual artistic cultural heritage and make it accessible and relevant in a local, national and global perspective.
