An art museum is first and foremost known for its permanent collection. A selected variety of artworks are chosen to be on display to the pleasure and entertainment of the visitors. Often the permanent collection is displayed in a chronological order. You reconstruct a story that you think makes sense. This is something Kunsten wants to challenge.
Why display artwork by the production year? Isn't it the soul meaning of art to overstep that boundary? And isn't it a constructed story when an art museum display its permanent collection to tell its audience only one story? In the 10 exhibitions rooms you will meet works of art from various periods, now joined in each other's company. Some rooms take up a certain theme. Others highlight a special connection between the works of art. Another room deconstructs the way we present the artwork - why not display surrealistic art just like they themselves exhibited it in the 1920's and 30's?
